Itea virginica, Virginia Sweetspire
SKU: n/a.Sun, shade, wet dry, who cares?
A beautiful, easily adaptable shrub, Virginia Sweetspire, Itea virginica, grows anywhere. This Missouri and Illinois native shrub features graceful drooping, white flower clusters. As its name implies, its 3- 6″ flowers are sweetly fragrant. Its flowers appear in spring and early summer. Virginia Sweetspire only grows 3-4′ tall and has a mounded, attractive shape. In fall another colorful show begins when Virginia Sweetspire’s leaves turn shades of red, orange, and gold. The stunning foliage lasts well into early winter.
An easy-to-grow shrub, Virginia Sweetspire tolerates wet and dry soil, full sun to full shade. Fantastic for grouping and massing on large banks, beds, and perennial and shrub borders. Virginia Sweetspire is good for woodland gardens, foundation plantings, and rain gardens. Its thick roots make it a smart choice for erosion control.
Virginia Sweetspire is very hardy and reliable and tolerates heat, high humidity, wet soils, and drought. Very easy to grow with little care, it adapts to most soils and light. Grows in sun to shade. Although tolerant of dark shade, blooming and fall color will be best in areas that get at least some sun each day. We call Sweetspires our “problem solvers” at Sugar Creek as they grow just about anywhere.
Be sure to keep Virginia Sweetspire well-watered for the first couple of years to ensure healthy root development.
