Opuntia humifusa – Prickly Pear Cactus
SKU: n/a.Prickly Pear, Opuntia humifusa, is one of the few Missouri and Illinois native cacti that can easily be grown in the garden. Showy large yellow flowers are followed by red edible fruits. Green edible paddles with long thorns grow into a semi-vigorous ground cover.
In fall, the paddles shrivel but stay around all winter long. Best planted where something evergreen may block the winter foliage. Watch out, the thorns bite!
Plant in sun in gritty, well draining soil.
