Allium stellatum – Fall Glade Onion
SKU: n/a.From the Ozark region of Missouri comes the native Fall Glade Onion, Allium stellatum. Its starry, bell-shaped reddish pink flowers appear in perfectly round clusters in mid to late summer. Its 12-18″ foliage goes dormant during or right after flowering. The flowers entice bees, moths, butterflies, and other creatures. It emits an oniony smell when cut or bruised. Although the bulbs and leaves of this plant were once used as a food source, this species of Allium is not generally considered to be of culinary value today. This easy-to-grow native Missouri and Illinois perennial is also called Prairie Onion and Cliff Onion.
It shines in native gardens, pollinator, and cottage gardens. Drought tolerant and deer and rabbit resistant.
Plant in sun to part shade in rocky, sandy, or well-draining soil. It benefits from protection from the hot afternoon sun. To grow more plants, divide mature bulbs in the fall and replant. The plant will also reseed.
