2025 Native Plant Of The Year
A beautiful Missouri and Illinois native perennial, Golden Alexander, Zizia aurea, adorns the landscape with attractive flat-topped clusters of tiny yellow flowers from spring to early summer. Its attractive glossy leather-like leaves form a tidy mound in the garden, perfect for the middle of the border. It is lovely massed in open woods, prairies, or native gardens. It grows easily in average, well-drained soils in full sun to light shade. An important wildlife food source, Black Swallowtail butterfly and Missouri Woodlawn Swallowtail butterfly, also known as the Ozark Swallowtail, caterpillars feed on its leaves.
Designated the 2025 Native Plant Of The Year for its attractive looks, ease of care, and, most importantly, its support of pollinators and wildlife.
Plant Golden Alexander in moist, well-drained soils in sun to part shade. An easy-to-grow Missouri native.
