Podophyllum peltatum – Mayapple
A cherished woodland Missouri native perennial Mayapple, Podophyllum peltatum, covers the woodland floor with distinctive foliage. Large umbrella-like leaves up to 12″ in diameter emerge from a single stem. Plants will have either 1 or two leaves. From the two-leaf plants, a single, modding white 3″ flower appears but is usually hidden under the umbrella leaves. An edible green mayapple fruit follows, which turns golden and is used to make preserves and jellies. However, its leaves and roots are poisonous.
It spreads by rhizomes to make beautiful colonies. Plants go dormant in summer. It is excellent in woodlands, where it easily naturalizes.
Plant in shade to part shade in soil that has been amended with organic material.
