An outstanding selection of one of our U.S native wildflowers, Phlox, Captain Puggleface Largeleaf Phlox will return year after year. This delight makes a perfect choice for the cutting garden, to use as a specimen, or in mass plantings. Largeleaf Garden Phlox has been gaining gardening fans. Not as well known as other Phlox, Largeleaf Garden Phlox, Phlox amplifolia, has plant enthusiasts excited due to its many outstanding features. To begin with, it seems to be immune to powdery mildew. In summer, large flowers rise over its thick, shrubby foliage. It quickly matures to beautiful colonies with its underground runners, yet it does not bully nearby plants. It is not particular about soil and does well in drier soils than other Phlox. It makes an excellent choice for naturalized areas and meadows but also looks beautiful in more formal, traditional settings. In the wild, Phlox amplifolia can be found growing in many states in the U.S. In Missouri, it can be found in southern counties.
Growing instructions: Largeleaf Phlox prefers full sun to part shade. For best results, grow in soil amended with organic matter and keep well watered, especially when plants are setting up buds and blooming. For most blossoms, deadhead spent flowers or trim the plant back about halfway after each flush of bloom.
