Ilex – Berry Heavy Female Winterberry
SKU: n/a.Berry Heavy female Winterberry, Ilex vertcillata, produces copious amounts of bright red berries that shine in the fall and winter landscape. It is a deciduous holly, which means it loses its leaves in fall, but this makes that vivid fruit even showier. The berries delight in winter floral arrangements. Berries are only produced on female Winterberry and will need a male Winterberry in the area for berry production. Berries are not edible for humans but are relished by birds after they’ve softened in mid-winter.
This cultivar of the Missouri native shrub is prized for heavy berry production with larger red berries than the native. The bright red berries are an excellent winter food source for many native songbirds. They are also fabulous cut and used in winter arrangements.
Perfect for rain gardens, Winterberry shrubs are tolerant of a wide array of soil conditions, including consistently wet soils.
Plant in sun to light shade.
