Helianthus pauciflorus – Prairie Sunflower
SKU: n/a.If you need a large native plant for a wildflower or prairie garden, Prairie Sunflower, Helianthus pauciflorus, will shine in the space with its brilliant yellow blossoms. The huge 2-4″ flowers are loaded with petals, up to 25 each blossom. The petals and leaves contort into twisted blossoms or fold up lengthwise in dry weather. It is one of the first native Sunflowers to bloom with its flowers appearing mid-summer into fall. in It will grow 2-6′ tall and spread quickly by rhizomes. Prairie Sunflower is a delightful Illinois and Missouri native perennial. Also known as Stiff Sunflower and Showy Sunflower.
Prairie Sunflower makes a dramatic addition to naturalized, perennial, cottage, cutting, pollinator, and meadow gardens. However, due to its tendency to spread rapidly, it should be kept out of small gardens and spaces. Prairie Sunflower is an important pollinator plant, and its flowers feed many different butterflies and bees, including the beloved Monarch butterfly. It is also host to the butterfly Gorgone Checkerspot.
