Calathea pilosa – Peacock Plant
Thick white and yellow highlights on green leaves create a striking show on Calathea pilosa. Plants grow 6-8″ tall. This impressive houseplant likes bright indirect sunlight and moist soils. It prefers high humidity. Placing plant on a tray of pebbles and water will increase humidity around the plant. Just be sure the plant does not sit in the water.
Fantastic as a houseplant indoors. Outdoors it makes a wonderful stand-alone specimen, or it can be added to mixed seasonal annual containers. Plants rarely bloom indoors. Calthea’s flamboyant foliage has animal looks, giving them many common names including Peacock Plant, Prayer Plant, Zebra Plant, and Rattlesnake Plant.
Pet safe houseplant, non-toxic to dogs and cats.
Plant in well-draining, good potting soil. Fertilize plants when they are actively growing, usually April through Aug, following the fertilizer manufacturer’s directions. Water consistently, keeping plants evenly moist. Plants will require less water during the fall and winter months. Prayer Plant likes high humidity. To add humidity, place plants on a bed of wet pebbles or mist occasionally. Plants prefer warm temperatures and should not be moved outdoors until night temperatures are at least 60 degrees or more.
