2019 Perennial Plant Of The Year
You’ll adore the striking foliage as much as the vivid flowers of the 2019 Perennial Plant Of The Year ‘Hummelo’ Betony, Stachys monieri. Large, rounded clumps of emerald-green, long, textured leaves are topped with plump, lavender-rose flowers. Its remarkable floral display appears from early to midsummer into fall. It is very easy to grow in average soil, in full sun to light shade. Plants spread by creeping stems (stolons) and can be used as a ground cover.
‘Hummelo’ Betony works fantastic as a low-maintenance ground cover. Its charming flowers makes it ideal for cottage gardens, informal naturalized areas, and in woodland gardens. With its attractive foliage it always looks great. Try it as an edging plant or paired with other perennials.
A multiple award winner, ‘Hummelo’ Betony received the highest rating from the Chicago Botanic Garden Plant Evaluation Trials, and has received the top honor from the Perennial Plant Association, the 2019 Perennial Plant of the Year.
Plant in full sun to part shade in average to rich soil. Plants will benefit with a little shade during the hottest part of the day. Although drought tolerant, for best results water during dry spells.
