Prunus – Kwanzan Flowering Cherry Tree
SKU: n/a.With highly ruffled pink flowers Kwanzan Flowering Cherry is considered one of the showiest of all the Cherry trees. In Spring a profusion of sweet pink flowers cover this small to medium tree before leaves appear. Deep green leaves emerge with a slight bronze tint. Growing about 25′ tall and wide with a open vase shape, Kwanzan is ideal around fence lines, streets, and patios. Kwanzan excels as a smaller tree to shade a garden.
In 1912, the people of Japan donated 12 different varieties of flowering cherry trees to the U.S. for planting in the Washington, D.C. area. From that original donation, the Yoshino cherry was planted in the Tidal Basin area and the Kwanzan cherry was planted in the East Potomac Park area. Also goes by the name Kanzan and Sekiyama.
Plant Cherry trees in full sun in moist well-drained soils. Amend soil with compost when planting and add a quality starter fertilizer. Keep well watered through summer dry spells.
