Phlox glaberrima – Smooth Phlox
Smooth Phlox , Phlox glaberrima, decorates the sun garden in late spring with large 12″ fragrant purplish-red flower panicles. A pretty Illinois and Missouri native perennial, it is excellent for cutting. In the garden, it tends to reseed, or it will spread slowly by slender rhizomes, creating brilliant banks of flowers. Grows 1-3′ tall, 2-2.5′ wide. Deer resistant. Butterflies and hummingbirds adore it.
Smooth Phlox is at home in the sunny garden. It prefers moist, rich soil. It is very easy to grow and has excellent disease resistance.
Plant in soil that has been amended with organic matter in full sun to part shade. For best results, keep well watered while the plant is getting established, when it is setting up blooms and blooming, and during dry spells.
