Perovskia atriplicifolia – Russian Sage
Multiple Award Winner
Russian Sage, Perovskia, brings hordes of lavender-blue flowers and fantastic ornamental silvery foliage. It matures to a silver shrub providing a stunning backdrop for other plants. With its silver highly dissected leaves Russian Sage makes an ideal filler. A wonderful addition to perennial gardens, its airy flowers attract pollinators and other interesting flying creatures, yet deer and rabbits don’t like it. Very easy to grow, it tolerates hot, dry spots and drought, and needs little care once established.
Russian Sage, Perovskia, won the prestigious award the 1995 Perennial of the Year by the Perennial Plant Association. The Perennial Plant Association is a group composed of growers, retailers, landscape designers and contractors, educators, and others who are professionally involved in the herbaceous perennial industry. Designated a Plant of Merit by the Missouri Botanical Garden for its many outstanding attributes.
Plant in full sun in well-draining soil. Although drought tolerant, for best blooming keep well watered when setting up buds and blooming. Plants benefit from good soakings during dry spells. In spring when new growth appears on the plant, cut back foliage right above the lowest bud.
