Panicum Cheyenne Sky, Switch Grass
Absolutely fabulous decorative containers are easy to create with Cheyenne Sky Red Switch Grass, Panicum. Growing just 3′ (2′ before blooming), Cheyenne Sky forms a tight, vase-shaped clump of blue-green foliage that begins turning wine red in early summer.
By late summer, the clump is drenched in color and is topped by matching wine-red flower airy panicles. It makes a spectacular specimen plant and is even more eye-catching when planted en masse in the landscape.
Switch Grass gets its name from the peaceful swishing sound it makes when blowing in the wind. All parts of this grass are very sturdy, and will remain standing thru winter unless snows are heavy. This provides important cover for birds during the coldest days of winter. Use this grass as a gorgeous specimen, in masses, for screening, alongside ponds or streams, in large containers mixed with other plants, or alone as a dynamite specimen.
A member of the Ornamental Grasses of the PRAIRIE WINDS Collection. These varieties add graceful texture and movement to the garden, thrive in full sun growing conditions and are proven deer resistant.
Having a large root system, Switch Grass handles anything that Missouri weather throws at it. It will grow in areas that flood, but also extremely drought tolerant once established, Switch Grass solves many difficult garden problems and is beautiful to boot. Switch Grass prefers lean soils-no fertilizer needed!
Plant in full sun to part shade. Cut back in late winter
