Oligoneuron ridellii – Riddell’s Goldenrod
SKU: n/a.Riddell’s Goldenrod, Oligoneuron ridellii, brings bright yellow blossoms to the late summer and fall garden. An easy-to-grow Missouri and Illinois native, it features tiny, bright yellow flowers on dense, flat-topped florets atop stiff stems. Plants will typically grow 2-3′ tall. Goldenrods are wrongly accused of causing hay fever when people experience allergic reactions from wind-borne pollen from other plants, such as ragweed. Attractive to bees and butterflies. Deer resistant. They are also known as Solidago riddellii.
Use Riddell’s Goldenrod in native, pollinator, and naturalized areas. It prefers moist soil and makes an ideal addition to rain gardens. Very showy, Riddell’s Goldenrod pairs well with the Blazing Stars, Asters, Lobelia, and other fall-blooming species. It is an important food source for many native critters, including bees, butterflies, and birds. A host plant of many species of moths, caterpillars will feed on the leaves. Don’t be surprised when you see many different birds enjoying the caterpillars and seeds. Goldfinches, Sparrows, and Chickadees are just a few of the birds that flock to Riddell’s Goldenrod.
Grow Native Plant. Riddell’s Goldenrod has been identified as a Grow Native plant. The plant education program of the Missouri Prairie Foundation, the Grow Native program helps protect and restore biodiversity by increasing awareness of native plants and their effective use in urban, suburban, and rural developed landscapes. Out of a vast selection of natives, these are the top species for urban landscaping and for creating wildlife habitat, stabilizing streams, and other ecological purposes.
Plant in sun in good soil. It prefers moist soil. Removing spent flowers will encourage more blossoms.
