This easy Missouri native shrub forms into an informal shaggy mound with narrow green leaves. Easy to grow. St John’s Wort naturally grows in dry rocky areas. It tolerates a wide range tough conditions as long as the soil is well-drained.
Shrubby St. John’s Wort is the host plant for the Gray Hairstreak butterfly and an array of moths. The seeds that follow flowers are a favorite food source.
Plant in full sun. St John’s Wort blooms on new wood. To encourage new wood, prune about 1/3 off of the shrub in late winter or early spring before shrubs has leafed out.
