Epimedium Rubrum – Bishop’s Hat
This Bishop’s Hat, Epimedium alpinum Rubrum, bears deep ruby red and yellow flowers that dangle on wiry stems in spring. Soft green, heart-shaped leaves, tinged with red when young, turn pale green in summer and coppery-red and yellow in fall. Epimediums require a minimum of maintenance to look good and are very long-lived. Although tolerant of poor dry soil, amending the soil when planting will give you the best results. They do well even in the tough conditions of dry, rocky, shallow soils and dense shade. Epimediums take about three years to mature fully, yet once they do, they make excellent ground covers and even do well under mature trees. Deer and Rabbits find Bishop’s Hat distasteful. Trim foliage back in late winter. Also known as Red Barrenwort.
