Delphinium exaltatum – Larkspur
SKU: n/a.If you’ve been disappointed in the past trying to grow the cool summer-loving Delphinium, try our native Missouri perennial Larkspur, Delphinium exaltum. This beauty soars 4-6′ tall with long racemes of 1″ gentian blue long-spurred flowers in summer. Gorgeous colonies of Larkspur can be found in Missouri.
Being a native Missouri plant it can take the heat Mother Nature throws at it better than other Larkspur. That being said, it prefers a little more tlc than other natives. The plant grows well in fertile, moist, well-drained soil. It needs a sunny location, yet benefits from protection from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or strong dappled light will work.
Plant light shade or filtered light in soil that has been amended with compost or other organic matter. For best results fertilize. Keep plants well watered especially when they are setting up buds, blooming, and during dry spells.
