Betula nigra – River Birch Tree
SKU: n/a.One of the most popular Missouri native trees, the River Birch, Betula nigra, is a beautiful, tough, adaptable tree that can grow in a wide range of soil types and climates. It is known for its distinctive bark, which can range from gray to reddish-brown and can peel away in sheets to reveal smooth, cinnamon-colored bark underneath. This unique bark gives the tree a striking appearance in any landscape and provides a valuable food source for various wildlife. River Birch can be up to 70 feet tall in ideal conditions but often remains smaller in home landscapes. The dark green, oval-shaped, serrated leaves turn a beautiful golden-yellow color in fall before dropping for the winter.
River Birch is also known for its adaptability to wet and poorly-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for low-lying areas or near streams, ponds, or other bodies of water. It is also pest-resistant and can tolerate some drought once established, making it a low-maintenance choice for a variety of landscaping needs.
The River Birch is a beautiful and versatile tree well-suited to Missouri’s climate and landscape. Whether used as a specimen tree or planted in groups, it adds beauty and value to any outdoor space. Host plant to the Luna Moth and Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly.
Plant River Birch in moist to wet soils in part shade. Naturally found around rivers making River Birch is tolerant of extremely wet conditions, but is also tolerant of average, well-drained soils and heavy clay.
