Apios americana – Groundnut Vine
SKU: n/a.A Missouri native vine for shade
The versatile Groundnut Vine, Apios americana, brings fascinating flowers, a healthy food choice, and historical interest. A Missouri native vine, it thrives in the shade. 3-5″ long racemes of pinkish-maroon flowers appear from the leaf axils in summer. The flowers perfume the air with a spicy cinnamon scent. Its edible tubers provide many health benefits, including being a great protein, calcium, and iron source. Often used like a potato, American Indians taught the first pilgrims how to use them. Vines grow 8-16′ tall. This vigorous vine is best on a trellis or arbor, where its rapid growth won’t crowd out others. Vines die to the ground each year. Also called Cinnamon Vine and Hodomio.
An important food source for many different types of wildlife, it is a butterfly host plant for the Silver-Spotted Skipper and Southern Cloudywing caterpillars.
Harvesting tubers: dig tubers in the fall. A hard frost will make the tubers sweeter. Caution: tubers should not be consumed raw due to toxic protease inhibitors. Cooking renders them harmless. Tubers can be dug and stored in a dark, dry area for later planting. Tubers may take 2-3 years to reach a desirable size for harvesting.
Plant in shade to part shade. Plants prefer moist soil and good drainage.
