Amsonia tabermontana – Willowleaf Blue Star
SKU: n/a.Top Award Winner
A popular native plant Willowleaf Blue Star, Amsonia tabermontana, explodes in late spring into early summer with powder blue star-shaped flowers in loose clusters that top a mound of narrow-leaved foliage. An excellent choice to bring billowy, fine texture to landscapes. A lovely Missouri and Illinois native perennial, Willowleaf Blue Star looks at home next to ponds in naturalized areas but also looks great in more formal settings. Its nectar is attractive to the Ruby Throated Hummingbird, bees, moths, and butterflies.
Easy to care for, Willowleaf Blue Star tolerates heat, humidity, and drought and is deer-resistant. It tolerates poor soil quality and works well in rain gardens, naturalized areas, and mass plantings. In fact, it grows best in average soil. It makes a lovely cut flower.
Awarded the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Plant of Merit designation for its outstanding qualities. The American Horticultural Society selected Willowleaf Blue Star as one of the 75 Great Plants for American Gardens.
Plant in sun to part shade in average soil. For bushier plants, cut back 1/3-1/2 after flowering. Plants grown in shady areas and/or rich soil may flop and need staking.
