Asclepias tuberosa – Butterfly Milkweed
SKU: n/a.2017 Perennial Plant of the Year Asclepias tuberosa Butterfly Milkweed
Our most popular Missouri native perennial, Butterfly Milkweed, Asclepias tuberosa, serves as an adult nectar source and a larval food source for the Monarch butterfly. With Butterfly Milkweed, you’ll enjoy brilliant tangerine orange or vibrant yellow flowers for most of the summer. Cutting back spent flowers will stimulate another bloom cycle. Butterfly Milkweed’s showy seed pods are a lovely addition to dried flower arrangements. Easy to grow in sunny areas. Missouri native wildflower.
Use Butterfly Milkweed in native gardens, butterfly and pollinator gardens, and naturalized areas. It also works excellent in more formal settings, perennial beds, and containers. Butterfly Milkweed adds charm to cottage gardens and makes a unique addition to children’s gardens. It also mixed well with the other Asclepias species.
Plant in full sun locations in well-draining soil.
Named the 2017 Perennial Plant of the Year by the Perennial Plant Association. With all the ”buzz” about bees and butterflies, why not celebrate an excellent plant known for supporting insects and birds and serving as the primary caterpillar food for a beloved North American native butterfly? The Perennial Plant Association selected Asclepias tuberosa as its 2017 Perennial Plant of the Year. Perennial Plant Association is a trade association composed of growers, retailers, landscape designers, contractors, educators, and others professionally involved in the herbaceous perennial industry.
