Tacca chantrieri – Bat Plant
SKU: n/a.Want to add some gothic intrigue to your houseplant collection? The Bat Plant, Tacca chantrieri, blooms bat-like flowers that tantalize. The almost black blooms burst out, growing almost 1′ across with their showy “whiskers”. Deep glossy green oval foliage can reach upwards of 2′ across. This unusual beauty requires bright indirect light to bloom but does not want any direct sunlight. Native to the jungles of China the Bat Plants wants plenty of humidity. If humidity gets below 50% add a pebble tray or humidifier to keep moisture levels up.
Plant in well-draining, good potting soil. Fertilize plants occasionally when they are actively growing, usually April through August, following the fertilizer manufacturer’s directions. Keep plants consistently moist, but not sopping wet. Plants will require less water during the fall and winter months. Plants prefer warm temperatures and should not be moved outdoors until night temperatures are at least 60 degrees or more. Keep in bright indirect light or under a grow light. Direct sunlight through a window may cause leaf scorch.
