Ptelea trifoliata – Hop Tree
SKU: n/a.$69.99
A native understory tree with an interesting history, the Hop Tree, Ptelea trifoliata, is attractive and versatile. Growing about 15-20′ tall with thin crooked stems, the branching creates a living sculpture in the garden. Small yellow-green start-shaped flowers bloom in June, attracting butterflies – especially the Giant Swallowtail as it is a host plant to its caterpillars. Flowers give way to dangling papery seed clusters that can persist after leaves drop, adding winter interest. The seed pods were used as a substitute for hops in brewing, giving the Hop Tree its name. Glossy green leaves turn neon yellow in fall.
Tolerant of dry, rocky soils and drought. Great choice for butterfly gardens.
Plant Hop Tree in part to full shade, but can tolerate full sun as well. It tolerates many soil conditions.
