Passiflora caerulea – Maypop
SKU: n/a.Enjoy one of the most unique flowers on the planet with the Blue Maypop, Passiflora caerulea. Its distinctive fringed flowers feature white petals and sepals and a central crown of blue filaments. Flowers appear July to September. The fragrant flowers are followed by kiwi-like fruit. The edible fruit can be eaten fresh or made into jelly. It earned its name by the loud popping sound its fruits make when stepped on. Its three-lobed ornamental foliage adds to its charm. It attracts butterflies and other important pollinators.
Use Maypop on trellises and arbors. It clings by tendrils and will need something to climb on. It grows 6-8′ tall and spreads 3-6′ wide. In ideal conditions it will spread by root suckers. Drought tolerant once established.
Also known as Passion Flower. It earned this name long ago in the 1500’s by Catholic priests who believed that parts of the plant symbolized the suffering and death of Jesus Christ, the “Passion.”
Plant in full sun to light shade in soil that has been amended with compost or other organic matter.
