Melanthium virginicum – Bunchflower
SKU: n/a.For years, we have tried to get our hands on Bunchflower, Melanthium virginicum, and we finally have a few to offer. A stunning Missouri and Illinois native perennial, Bunchflower becomes the star of the garden when its 3-5′ tall flower stalks come into bloom. The tall stalks are topped with a fascinating panicle of creamy, white to green flowers. The flowers emerge from a basal rosette of arching 15″ grass-like leaves. The stunning blossoms appear from June to July and are followed by ornamental seed capsules extending the decorative season in the garden. All parts of this plant contain toxic alkaloids, which discourages animal nibbling.
Designated a Missouri Botanical Garden Plant of Merit for its many outstanding qualities.
Growing instructions: Bunchflower can be grown in various soil types, including clay, but prefers moist, rich, slightly acidic soils in full to partial sun. In the wild this plant is found in wet prairies, bogs, and fens.
