Echinacea – Sombrero Salsa Red Coneflower
One of our absolute favorites, Sombrero Salsa Red Coneflower, Echinacea, delights us with sweetly fragrant, ruby red blossoms and orange-brown cones. The petals overlap, giving the flowers a fuller, more polished look. A member of the exceptional Sombrero series of Coneflowers, which were bred to be compact plants with turbocharged blooming power. Its prolific blooming begins in late spring and will continue through late summer, with additional sporadic blossoms appearing until frost. Sombrero Salsa Red Coneflower exhibits superior performance, including great branching, which results in multitudes of blooms. Its deep green leaves and compact habit add more outstanding qualities.
With loads of brilliant red, daisy-like blossoms for months, ‘Salsa Red’ Coneflower creates ultimate floral displays for gardens, containers, cut flower bouquets and dried arrangements. Excellent for mass plantings, meadows, and naturalized areas. Butterflies can’t resist its nectar, and birds love its seeds.
Plant Coneflower, Echinacea, in full sun to part shade. Add a shovel full or two of organic matter to soil when planting. Tolerant of drought, but for best blooming keep well watered when plants are setting up bud and in bloom. Although they will bloom continually without deadheading, cutting back spent blooms will encourage more flowers. Coneflower’s seed heads are a favorite for dried flower arrangements and add considerable interest to winter landscapes. Goldfinches and other birds swarm to Coneflower seeds.
