The first in the world hardy Elephant Ears!
If you are a true adventurer, Polargreen Hardy Elephant Ears, Colocasia, will take you on an exotic voyage. The first hardy Elephant Ears has proven hardy in zone 5. Polar Green delights us with its big floppy green leaves on pink stems. It grows 3-5′ tall. This elephant ear does not produce a bulb.
Use Polargreen Elephant Ears in containers and the garden; anywhere an exotic show is welcome. It looks fantastic in mass plantings and near the water’s edge around pools, fountains, and ponds. It makes a tremendous partner to other seasonal plants. Although plants will return when planted in the ground, they will not return in pots unless the pots are moved to a protected area for winter.
Growing instructions: Plant in full sun to part shade in soil that has been amended with compost or other organic matter. Keep the plant consistently moist. Plants produce prodigious growth and benefit from regular fertilization. In St. Louis, the plant can be planted in the ground in mid-spring after the last frost date (in St. Louis, April 15). Apply a 4-6″ layer of mulch after first fall frost. Protect potted plants from extreme cold of winter.
