Beloved by bees and butterflies, expect to find buzzing activity on Summersweet Ruby Spice, Clethra, when blooming. Highly fragrant crystal-pink flowers spikes bloom in late summer on Ruby Spice. The spikes cover glossy green foliage, looking like bright candles floating on top of the rounded shrub. A more compact variety, plant Ruby Spice near a patio where the sweet fragrance can best be smelled.
Designated a Plant of Merit by the Missouri Botanical Garden for it’s exceptional ornamental qualities and dependable performance in the St. Louis area.
Summersweet are delightful shrubs prized for their sweetly scented flowers which attract bees and butterflies. Naturally found in swampy areas, they prefer to placed in locations with plenty of water, a great choice for rain gardens. They prefer sun to part shade, but can tolerate deep shade.
