Asclepias perennis – Aquatic Millkweed
SKU: n/a.A long-flowering Milkweed, Aquatic Milkweed, Asclepias perennis, prefers wet areas and tolerates shade. Snowy white flowers, sometimes pink-tinged, are borne on umbels and appear from late spring into summer. Drooping seed pods follow. Aquatic Milkweed attracts pollinators and Monarch butterflies, as its clusters of mildly fragrant flowers attract insects from all around. It grows 18-24″ tall and 12-18″ wide.
A native perennial of Missouri and Illinois, Aquatic Milkweed needs consistently moist soil and can withstand standing water for a short time, making it ideal for rain gardens. It naturally grows on the sides of rivers, creeks, ponds, and in swamps and wet woods. It is a host plant, an important food source, for Monarch butterflies, as their caterpillars exclusively feed on Milkweeds’ leaves.
Plant in moist soil in sun, part shade to shade.
