Amorpha fruticosa – False Indigo Bush
SKU: n/a.A versatile native shrub, False Indigo Bush, Amorpha fruticosa, can create dense hedges, help control erosion, and attract pollinators with its showy nectar-rich flowers. Large spikes of fragrant dark purple with bright orange contrasting anthers appear from April through June. Pollinators and butterflies swarm the vibrant flowers. Soft green rounded leaves slightly dangle on long stems. Found naturally around river edges, False Indigo Bush can tolerate wet conditions and occasional flooding. Its suckering nature will slowy form in to dense thickets that hold soil in place, making in perfect in areas with water runoff issues. Great in rain gardens as well. It will tolerate dry spots with a bit of afternoon shade. Deer and rabbit resistant.
Host plant to the clouded sulphur, gray hairstreak, hoary edge, Io moth, marine blue, silver-spotted skipper, and southern dogface.
Plant in full sun to part shade. Water through drought during the first few seasons of establishment. If plants need revitalizing, cut back to about 6″ in early spring. Can be trained into a small tree.
