An easy-to-grow Missouri native tree or large shrub, Downy Serviceberry, Amelanchier arborea, brings dangling clusters of white flowers in spring. Green berries follow that turn red then ripen to deep purple-black in the late summer which can be harvested for jams and other delicious dishes. Berries also provide food for birds and other wildlife. Illinois native tree. Also known as Juneberry.

In fall leaves turn intense colors of yellow, red, and orange. Its attractive bark stands out in the winter landscape. Downy Serviceberry grows 15-25′ tall and wide. It can be grown as a single-stemmed tree or as a  multistemmed shrub. It will spread by root suckers. Downy Serviceberry naturally grows as an understory tree on the border of woods.

Designated a Missouri Botanical Garden Plant of Merit for its outstanding qualities.
