Actea racemosa – Cimicifuga racemosa – Fairy Candles

A majestic Missouri and Illinois native perennial, Fairy Candles, Actea racemosa, and known as Cimicifuga racemosa, enchants the garden with long, narrow, bottle brush racemes of fragrant white flowers. Perfectly named, it lights the garden with wiry stems of luminous flowers high above its mound of ferny foliage. Plants grow to 4-6′ tall, but in ideal conditions its flowers are known to soar to 8′. Even though Fairy Candles grows tall, it only grows 2-4′ wide, a perfect size to scatter around the shade garden. Its rich foliage creates a soothing setting, making it a stunning addition to shady woodlands and naturalized areas. Easy to grow in organically rich, moist soils. Also known as Snakeroot, Bugbane, and Black Cohosh.
Plant in shade to part shade locations in soil that has been amended with compost or other organic matter. Keep well watered until plants are established and during dry spells.
