Succulent Pine Cone Centerpiece

How to Make a Succulent Pine Cone Centerpiece

This pretty and festive succulent pine cone arrangement looks difficult, but you can make it in a snap with just a few elements. Here you’ll find the step-by-step instructions, along with photos to easily make your own.

Gather the Ingredients

Succulent Pine Cone Centerpiece Ingredients

  1. 3-5 small succulents, amount depends upon size of pine cone. Odd numbers work best. We’ve used 5 here. Hardy and non hardy succulents may be used. Included in this group are Echevaria, Sempervivum, Crassula and others.
  2. Pine cone, we’ve used a large one, but any size will work.
  3. Sphagnum moss.
  4. Decorative moss.
  5. Spray glue to attach moss.
  6. Something to poke small holes–pencil or small snips works well.
  7. Optional seasonal, holiday, or special occasion decorations–bows, berries, seed pods, miniature figurines, the sky’s the limit on how you can decorate these.
  8. If you want to hang it you’ll need fishing line.

Spray Pine Cone With Glue

Spray the glue on the area of the pine cone where you will attach the sphagnum moss. This is where you want to place the succulents.

Attach Sphagnum Moss

Fill in the area with the glue with the sphagnum moss. The moss is where the plants roots will grow, so get it down between the scales of the pine cone.

Remove Soil from the Succulents

Remove most of soil from succulent roots. You will want about a 1″ stem along with their roots to place in the pine cone.

Attach Succulents

Make holes with a pencil or snips where you want to place your succulents. Push the succulents into the moss stem first and arrange to your liking.

Attach Decorative Moss

This is an optional step, but it adds a nice touch. Simply tuck decorative moss into sections between succulents.

Attach Decorations

Another optional step. Your succulent centerpiece can be enhanced for any holiday, occasion or season. Simply add your special decorations. We’ve used faux berries and a simple bow here. You can add bows, berries, seed pods, small Christmas ornaments, mini figurines, mini pumpkins and turkeys–and the list goes on and on and on…..

If You Want to Hang It Use Fishing Line

Succulent Centerpiece Care

Succulents prefer bright light. A south or west facing window is best. Indoors, mist plants a few times a week, being sure plants are dried out thoroughly before misting again. Outdoors place in a sunny area that receives bright light. Water thoroughly when dry. Succulent are very forgiving about missed watering. Over watering and not letting the plants dry out between watering will kill plants. The more light it receives the more water it will need.
