Viburnum nudum – Possumhaw Viburnum – Smooth Witherod
SKU: n/a.Possumhaw Viburnum, Viburnum nudum, brings lustrous glossy foliage much prettier than other varieties. Loaded with more great features, the color show starts with its fragrant, flat-topped pearl white flowers in late spring and summer. The flowers are followed with colorful oval berries that begin green and then transform to pink, blue, and dramatic near-black purple, with all the colors appearing at once. So beautiful, you’ll be mesmerized by the striking berry clusters set off by its lovely shiny leaves. In fall, leaves turn rich wine-red. It matures to a 5-12′ tall and wide shrub. It is a host plant for the spring azure butterfly and hummingbird clearwing moth. It is also called Smooth Witherod, American Withe Rod, Southern Wild Raisin, and Wild Raisin.
Use Possumhaw Viburnum as a hedge, specimen plant, and in naturalized areas. With its ruggedness and beauty, It is ideal for home landscapes. It grows well in full sun or partial shade. Many creatures of nature, including you, butterflies, hummingbirds, birds, bees, and other wildlife, will delight in all that it brings. It tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, making it a good choice for rain gardens.
Plant Possumhaw Viburnum in full sun to part shade in soil amended with compost or other organic matter. Adding a starter fertilizer when planting will establish the plant fast. Keep well watered until established, when the plant is setting up buds and blooming, and during dry spells. Pruning is unnecessary, but if needed, Prune lightly in the fall.
