Verbesina helianthoides, Yellow Crown Beard
A stately Missouri native perennial, Yellow Crown Beard, Verbesina helianthoides, features fuzzy leaves and bright yellow daisy-like flowers. It flowers in early to mid-summer. Native to the prairies and rocky upland forests, it tolerates drought and its foliage is rarely bothered by disease. Attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies and birds. Deer and rabbit don’t bother it. It prefers full sun to part shade. A good choice for dry shady, woodland areas. Yellow Crown Beard forms colonies from its rhizomes.
