Thalictrum – Splendide Meadow Rue
Adored for its flowers and foliage, Splendide Meadow Rue, Thalictrum, brings fluffy clouds of dangling lavender-pink flowers with prominent yellow centers. The airy flowers float on dramatic deep burgundy stems highlighted with lacy blue-green foliage. One of the tallest shade perennials it matures to 6′ or so, but towers to 9′ in ideal conditions. Only growing 2′ wide makes it a top choice for narrow areas, as a specimen, or for back of the border. Its refined stems and foliage brings a majestic element to the garden. It almost looks like a giant fern. Absolutely spectacular in bloom, a top choice for shade gardens. A hybrid of Thalictrum delavayi.
Though delicate-looking Meadow Rue is actually pretty tough. If given the right combination of shade and water Meadow Rue thrives in St. Louis. It needs more water the more sunlight it’s given. It combines beautifully with other plants in woodland gardens, shady areas, or cutting and pollinator gardens. Its billowing blossoms create beautiful cut bouquets. Deer and rabbit resistant.
Plant in shade to part shade in soil that has been amended with compost or other organic matter. Keep well watered, especially when plants are setting up buds, blooming, or during dry spells.
