Silphium perfoliatum Cup Plant
A stately Missouri native perennial, the Cup Plant, Silphium perfoliatum, is one of the best plants for attracting birds and other wildlife to the garden. Showy sunflower-like blossoms appear in summer and fall on tall stems. Its rich nectar and abundant seeds attract butterflies, bees, and birds – particularly goldfinches. The large cup-shaped leaves hold water giving birds a natural bathing and drinking spot; frogs love soaking in the cool puddles. Host plant to the Silphium Moth.
Plant Cup Plant, Silphium perfoliatum, in sunny spots with consistent moisture. This tall plant is ideal for the back of the border or where privacy is needed.
