Paeonia Shimadaijin Island Minister aka Yagumo Layered Clouds Tree Peony
A rare Imperial Peony from Japan, Shimadaijin Island Minister also known as Yagumo Layered Clouds Tree Peony, Paeonia, is considered one of the best. Majestic 8”, semi-double, fragrant, rich magenta purple blossoms bring brilliant color to the garden. Matures into an incredible specimen plant that grows 3-5’ tall.
Tree peonies are woody shrubs that do not die to the ground like garden peonies. They can live 100 years or more.
Planting – Tree Peonies are grafted plants. When planting add compost and bury the graft union (bulge on the main stem) 4-6″ below the soil surface. This will encourage more roots. After planting, only an inch or two of the woody stem may show above the ground. A partially shaded site, protected from the hot afternoon sun, will prolong the lives of its blossoms.
Fertilizing – To encourage a bumper crop of spring flowers an application of bone meal or a fertilizer with a high potash content should be applied in early fall. In spring, lightly fertilize with an all-purpose fertilizer.
Pruning – Tree Peonies rarely need pruning except to remove dead wood, although they can be pruned to rejuvenate an old shrub, or to maintain a desired shape and size. The best time to prune is early spring just as their buds are swelling, yet Gardener beware, you will be pruning off spring flowers.
