A favorite of humans and other creatures, the native perennial, Prairie Blazing Star, Liatris pycnostachya, brings tall spires of purple flowers in July, August and September. Its flower spikes are covered with purple petals that first appear at the top then work their way down. Adored by butterflies, hummingbirds, bees and other beings. It makes a beautiful cut flower.
Prairie Blazing Star makes the ideal choice for rain gardens, native gardens and naturalized areas. A tough plant that tolerates poor soil, drought, heat and humidity.
