Ilex v. Mr. Poppins, Male Winterberry
The male pollinator for the showy female Winterberry, Mr. Poppins male Winterberry, Ilex verticillata, is a perfect dwarf companion for the highly productive Berry Poppins. This dwarf version of the Missouri native shrub only grows 3-4′ tall and wide. Host plant to over 35 different butterflies and moths, including Henry’s Elfin Butterfly.
Tolerant of consistently wet or boggy soils, Winterberries are an ideal choice for rain gardens or areas with excessive water. Female Winterberry shrubs require a male pollinator like Mr. Poppins for best berry production. Unlike traditional Hollies, Winterberries are deciduous.
