The special qualities that make Game Changers blooming machines.
Many Hydrangeas will start producing buds only when the days are long in the summer. Game Changer Hydrangeas are daylight neutral, meaning they will start blooming in spring and continue into fall. Some Hydrangeas only bloom on old wood, their buds begin to form in late summer for the following spring bloom. These buds can be lost if pruned from late summer on, or if we experience a late cold snap in spring that kills the buds. But you don’t have to worry about that anymore. Game Changer Hydrangeas bloom on new wood guaranteeing you blossoms spring through fall.
As far as their parentage, it’s top secret, kind of like the Coca Cola recipe. Jim Devereux, whose company brought these beauties to market shared:
They are not macrophylla. They are an interspecific cross of three species, which we keep proprietary as we have the utility patent on the cross. We label them as Hynrangea spp Hyp. The Game Changer Series will continue to bloom all season. Trimming older flowers will promote increased flowering through the season. Watering in Aluminum Sulfate one time in the spring will enhance colors for the entire season. Their ability to bloom quickly in the spring keeps the plant from growing too large, eliminating the need to trim repeatedly. In the fall they may be cutback to the ground or cut to shape.
Plant in shade to part shade, morning sun with afternoon shade or dappled light is best. Add compost or other organic matter to soil when planting. Use a starter fertilizer like Espoma Bio-tone Starter to get your plants off to a quick start. Keep well watered when establishing plants, and when plants are setting up buds and blooming.
