Epimedium – Pink Champagne Barrenwort
One of our favorite Barrenwort, Epimedium, Pink Champagne’s bubbly flowers are held high above the foliage, where we can see up close its intricate pink flowers with white spurs and raspberry centers. The flowers with dramatic pink tones are held on airy stems. But don’t be fooled by its delicate look, this dynamo is a vigorous variety. Another outstanding feature — its evergreen leaves are mottled green with dark burgundy.
Epimedium is a tough plant that will survive in nearly any shady location. Though it prefers rich, moist, woodland soils with a neutral to slightly acidic pH, it will adapt to a wide range of conditions. It will even grow under large, thirsty trees. Mulching around the plants will help to keep the weeds away. Trimming off all of the old foliage in late winter will make room for a fresh flush of leaves and may increase flower production.
Plant in shade to part shade in well draining soils. Epimedium can be divided in early fall and is rarely troubled by pests or diseases.
