Crocus sativus Saffron Crocus
SKU: n/a.Since ancient times Saffron Crocus, Crocus sativus, has been cultivated for its spice and attractive fall blooms. In mid-autumn large beautiful violet-blue blossoms appear. Distinctive long style branches are tipped with the coveted stigmas that produce the saffron, the most expensive spice in the world. It takes 75,000 flowers to produce one pound of saffron.
Resistant to deer, rabbit and squirrel. Plants grow 4-6″ tall.
Plant bulbs in soil that has been amended with organic matter and a handful or so of bulb fertilizer like Bulb Tone, following manufacturer’s instructions. Plants like well drained soil. Plant corms 42-4″ deep and 3-4″ apart in late summer to early fall.
Crocus are the some of the longest-lived and most prolific of the flowering bulbs. After planting, little to no care is needed to enjoy them year after year.
