Carex pensylvanica Pennsylvania Sedge or Oak Sedge
SKU: n/a.The Ideal Shade Ground Cover
A fantastic Missouri native, Pennsylvania Sedge, Carex pensylvanica, makes a great ground cover. It easily grows in tough spots even in dry shade under trees. Wispy bright green blades, 6-12″ tall, form a dense ground cover that is difficult for weeds to grow through. Excellent under trees, especially Oaks, this semi-evergreen Sedge is ideal for naturalizing and for planting in areas where lawn grass is difficult to establish. Its fine texture and fountaining habit give this sedge a soft appearance that is lovely for bordering shade perennial gardens, or on its own as a shade lawn. Plants spread by rhizomes.
Pennsylvania grows easily in most soils. Once established it needs little or no care. A tough cookie, it tolerates some of the harshest conditions Mother Nature throws out–drought, dry soil, and deep shade. Therefore, it makes an ideal ground cover in tough spots where nothing else will grow or any place you don’t want to drag the hose.
Pennsylvania can be found naturally growing under Oak trees, hence it is also known as Oak Sedge.
Plant in full shade to part shade. Very easy to grow. Cut back once a year in late winter.
