Asclepias syrica, Common MilkweedSKU: n/a.
Sturdy stems hold up the pretty mauve flowers and large leaves of the Common Milkweed, Asclepias syrica. One of the essential host plants for the Monarch Butterfly caterpillar. Tolerant of most soils, except consistently wet. Large showy seed pods add beautiful and exotic additions to dried floral arrangements. Typically grows about 2-3′ tall, but can reach heights of 6′.
Common Milkweed is best planted in areas where its vigorous nature is appreciated – large open prairies, informal gardens and areas where butterflies and other pollinators are desired. Spreads via rhizomes and seeds, for best management remove seed pods before they open to keep Common Milkweed better behaved. Its large root system makes this an excellent choice for large areas with poor soils and erosion issues.
