Aristolochia tomentosa, Dutchman’s Pipe
Dutchman’s Pipe, Aristolochia tomentosa, has many delightful features that makes this a must-have. Missouri native perennial vine. Large heart shaped leaves densely grow on vigorous twining stems. In summer green and yellow flowers that are shaped like a tobacco pipe appear. This is the larval host plant for the Pipevine Swallowtail butterfly, a beautiful black and blue large butterfly.
Plant in full sun to part shade. Add organic matter or compost when planting. Prefers rich, moist soils. Intolerant of dry soils. May be cut back in late winter to control growth.
