Hummingbird Mint is useful for adding color to the garden late in the season when many other plants are finished. The airy flower spikes are wonderful cut, fantastic as the focal point of mixed containers. Its blossoms provide delicious food for hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. Its foliage smells distinctly like black licorice when crushed, thus another one of its common name, Anise Hyssop.
‘Blue Fortune’ resulted from a cross between A. rugosa and A. foeniculum. It was bred and selected by Gert Fortgens of the Arboretum Trompenberg in Rotterdam, Netherlands. 2004 Great Plant Picks award winner.
Plant in full sun in average soil. Keep well watered when establishing the plant, when the plant is setting up buds and blooming, and during prolonged dry spells.
