Gardening techniques

Dear Gardeners,

Over the years we have found techniques that help keep our gardens full of beautiful plants. Here we share our favorite tips and techniques.

Perennial Pruning.  If you spend any time at Sugar Creek you’re bound to hear us say “Whack it back” or “Give it a haircut” when talking about plants. Cut off something you want to grow?? With smart pruning you can encourage bigger and more blooms, time blooming, and improve the health of your plants. Watch your plants closely— they’ll usually tell you by their appearance what kind of pruning is in order. Here you’ll find several reasons to spend time in your garden every week with a pair of sharp shears or hand pruners. Perennial Pruning >>>

Soil Preparation. Increasing soil’s organic matter by 1% has the potential to increase flower and fruit by 12%. Even a small increase in organic matter can have a large impact on your garden. Here you’ll find Sugar Creek Gardens’ time-honored suggestions for preparation of your soil for planting. Soil Preparation >>>

Weed Less With Preen. We learned this great technique that botanical gardens use the world over years ago. Free yourself from weeding with Preen. Preen Weed Preventer stops weeds from germinating in flower and vegetable gardens, in ground covers and around trees and shrubs. Preen will not kill existing weeds. It will prevent new weeds from sprouting — eliminating the need for difficult and time‑consuming hand‑weeding. Without weeds, your valuable plants can grow larger and stronger. Preen Garden Weed Preventer >>>
