If you are looking for a grass that thrives in sun and shade, Northern Sea Oats, Chasmanthium latifolium, works great. A popular Missouri native perennial grass, its bamboo-like foliage creates narrow slightly arching plants that are decorated with interesting flowers in late summer. Its attractive flat green seed heads, that resemble sea oats, hang on slender stems and persist into winter turning reddish bronze. Wonderful as a cut and dried flower. It makes an excellent choice for the shade garden, woodland garden or for naturalized areas. It also grows well in full sun. Grows about 3′ tall.
